How do I sync my library?

Syncing your eReader

Syncing (short for synchronizing) means updating your eReader with your latest books, bookmarks, annotations, previews, and recommendations, as well as the latest Kobo software.

Here are some reasons why you should sync regularly:

  • Your bookmarks will be updated if you were reading on another Kobo eReader or with the Kobo Reading app.
  • The connection allows your eReader to download Kobo software updates for better performance and features.
  • You get recommendations for new books you might enjoy.
  • You get any books or previews that you added to your library from the Kobo website.

You can sync using Wi Fi, or by connecting your Kobo eReader to Kobo Desktop on your computer.

After you’ve synced, the covers of all your Kobo books and previews will appear in your Library. Some books may have a download icon on the cover – Tap the icon if you would like to download them to your Kobo eReader.

Your eReader is designed to sync over Wi Fi. Depending on the speed of your Wi Fi network and the size of your Library, your sync could take several minutes. As you sync, you’ll see your recently purchased books being downloaded.

To sync your Kobo eReader, from your Home page:
  1. Tap  Sync.
  • If you’re within range of a known network, your eReader automatically joins that network and will begin syncing.
  • If you aren’t within range of a known network, your eReader will begin the Adding a Network process.
For more information about using Wi Fi, or to troubleshoot a problem, see Using Wi Fi.

If you love reading, over time your Library may get large, and you might not want all your books on your Kobo eReader. You can keep a few of the books you’re reading on your eReader, or your entire Library.

The books that are in your Library but not on your eReader will appear with a Download icon on the cover. You can click the Download icon on any book to load it onto your eReader, or you can download your entire Library at once.

To download a book onto your eReader:

  1. Tap any book cover with the  Download icon.
The book will download to your eReader and you’ll be able to read it.

Troubleshooting problems ejecting your eReader

If you see an error message after trying to eject your eReader, or if your eReader doesn’t eject properly, there are several possible causes, usually because another program is accessing the eReader.

To successfully eject your eReader:

  1. Wait to allow the application to finish using your eReader, and then try to eject it again.
  2. Close any windows and applications that may be accessing your eReader, and then try to eject it again.
Note: Other applications that may be accessing your eReader include Adobe Digital Editions, Finder or Windows Explorer, an anti-virus application on your computer, or the operating system on your computer.
  3. Shut down your computer and unplug your eReader
