How do I add a book to my Kobo eReader?

Adding books to your Kobo eReader

It's easy to add new books to your Kobo eReader. When you purchase a new book or get a free book from Kobo, you'll find the book in your library after you sync your eReader. You can also add new books you've bought from other bookstores or books that you’ve found on the Internet to your library from your computer desktop (with or without Adobe Digital Editions) or from a micro SD card.

If you see a  Download icon on the cover of your book, it means the content is available in the Kobo Cloud, but isn’t on your eReader yet. You need to download the content to start reading.

Note: If you find an eBook with an .acsm file extension it’s protected by Adobe DRM, and you’ll need to connect your eReader to the Internet and use Adobe Digital Editions to add the book to your Library.

Sync is short for synchronizing and means updating your eReader with your latest books, bookmarks, annotations, previews and recommendations. It’s important to sync your eReader, because it means you get recent software updates, see all you new books in your Library, and get the latest bookmarks from other devices where you’ve been reading.

There are two ways you can sync; using Wi Fi, or by connecting your Kobo eReader to Kobo Desktop on your computer. Syncing by Wi Fi is easier if you don’t have your computer handy, but you may find syncing using your computer faster.

After you’ve synced, you’ll see the covers of all your books and previews in your Library. Some books may have a  download icon on the cover—just tap the cover to get the book contents on your eReader.

To sync your Kobo eReader with Wi Fi, from your Home page:

  • Tap  Sync.

If you’re within range of a Known network, your eReader automatically joins that network and updates your books, bookmarks, and recommendations.

If you aren’t within range of a Known network, your eReader will begin the process.

To sync your eReader with Kobo Desktop:

  1. Connect your eReader to your computer using the included USB cable.
  2. On your computer, start Kobo Desktop.
  3. Sign in to your Kobo account.
Note: If you’re not signed in, click the Sign In button at the top of your screen.

Note: before you disconnect your eReader from your computer, eject it from Kobo Desktop.
  5. Click the  Eject icon at the top of the screen.
When you've found a book you want to purchase, you simply tap Buy Now, and you're taken to checkout. You can use Visa, MasterCard, store credit, or a gift card to pay for your book. If you have a promo code (which is a sort of coupon) you can enter this during checkout to get a discount on your book.

To buy a book, from your Home page:

  1. Tap Bookstore.
  2. Tap one of the categories to find an eBook you’d like to buy.
  3. When you've found a book you want, tap Buy Now.

You can use Adobe Digital Editions to add EPUB and PDF books (including DRM-protected content) to your eReader, as well as books that are protected by Adobe Digital Rights Management (DRM).

To add an EPUB or PDF book to your eReader, on your eReader:

  1. Connect your eReader to your computer using the included USB cable.
A prompt will appear on the eReader screen.
  2. Tap Connect.

On your computer:

  1. Go to the folder where your eBook is saved.
  2. Right-click the book file and click Open With.
  3. Click Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe Digital Editions should start automatically and open the book.
  4. In Adobe Digital Editions, click the Library icon.
  5. Select your new book and drag it to the Kobo eReader bookshelf (listed on the left side under Bookshelves).

Note: Books that are protected by DRM have an .acsm file extension. This is a license for your book. You must be connected to the Internet when you open this file so that Adobe Digital Editions can verify the license and download the rest of the book.
